Oxford Street: Painted 2006. Lascaux. 40 hours. Limed Oak frame. M.A.N. Van of Black Mountain Foods, Cwmdu, Carms., driven by Pete Mitchell, ex B.R.S. /Phil Black artic. , in London's Oxford Street, early hours at Christmas time.
Jamiaca Inn: Painted 2008. Flashe Vinyl. 30 hours. Cornish Rowe Hillmaster Lorry set on the old A30, going past Joss Merlin's Inn, Bodmin Moor in winter. Brrr!
Low Bridge: Painted 2018. Lascaux. Maple Frame? Guy Big J, set near Weymouth with a load of FIAT cars from the dock there.. The old road, long been by-passed.
Bouley Bay: Painted 2019. Lascaux. (Sky unfinished). 30 hours. Sycamore Frame. Mid 1930s Sunbeam 25 car on the Bouley Bay Hill climb, Jersey, Channel Islands. Painted for Colleen who was born nearby to Bouley Bay, at St John.
Autumnal: Painted 2008. Lascaux. 45 hours. Russell's of Bathgate AEC, Southbound, A83, near Arrochar, Scotland.
Snowbound: Painted 1999. 49 hours. Based on Shap as it might have been. Foden, Guy, Scammell, Seddon, AEC. Man in the bus Driver's coat is based on Mumford's Alan Standen. He married a girl who worked in the Jungle Cafe at Selside. I think so, from memories of nearly 60 years ago. Main set up for painting is basically: Colours vs. White.
East of England: Painted 2023. Lascaux. 110 hours. 1960s Thornycroft Trusty, "the Rolls Royce of Lorries". Early a.m. East Yorkshire or North Lincolnshire setting.
The Woodlander: Painted 1997. 37 hours. Oak Frame. AEC Mammoth Major, Sussex/ Surrey woodland. Photo used for this image is of a 1997 laserprint of the painting.
Globetrotter: Painted 2010. 32 hours. Flashe Vinyl on Oak Panel. Pear wood Frame. One of Pollock's of Musselburgh eight Atkinson Mk 1 eight wheelers, driven by Sandy Watson from Aberdeen. Pollocks - classic Haulier and Drivers from the old days.
Rocket and Hinos: Painted 2011. Sennelier Acrylic. Hino Trucks in the Balochi style, with a Bedford Rocket driving by. Pakistani Truck Art, by proper Artists. Photo used is of a 2011 laser print of the painting.
Kip: Painted 2017. Lascaux, Graphite and Inks. 8 hours. Alder frame. Painting of a well known Tramp in Ceredigion, Dafydd Gwallt Hir / Long Haired David.
Heavy Haul: Painted 1996. Liquitex. 40 hours. Pickford's Scammell, Pennines setting. Jav (Jowett Javelin) and Scammell rigid 8 following, amongst others.
Mitcham Common: Painted 2018. Oak Frame. Foden S20 run by S.Clark and sons, London S.E.20. The Lorry was maybe one from Lancaster's of Mitcham, after they closed down. They ran Dark Green Foden tippers and Blue general haulage lorries. I think so, from memory. Also behind is one of half a dozen maybe Woodside Bricks cage-sided ERF Sabrinas, from Elmers End. It survived onto the early ERF rallies, minus the caged sides. When I worked at Rochester we'd often go via Mitcham Common , stop at the Rainbow Cafe for breakfast, and carry on to pick up the A30 and head for the South West. Pre M25 days. Going through that way we watched the M25 taking shape and some of these old London Lorries.
Red Tanker: Painted 1995. 60 hours. Sutton's of St. Helens Bow-fronted Atkinson. Was a tricky one, on account of the signwriting below the quarter light. I tried about 30 different colours for the doors of the building using cardboard cut outs. This Sea Green version seemed about right to set off the waggon, a complementary colour. Painted for the Late Great Tony Brown, Suttons Driver and Star of the Road. Photo used for the website is of a 1995 laserprint of the painting, so the colours aren't so bright.
Traws Cymru/ Across Wales: Painted 2019. Lascaux. 90 hours. Oak Frame. Mansel Davies' Volvo artic. milk tanker. Leaving Criccieth, Llŷn Peninsular, North Wales, driven by Gareth George. A great friend. Seen here heading for home in Sir Benfro/ Pembrokeshire. One hundred miles of what must be one of the most beautiful regular runs to be on in Britain. Not a motorway in sight, just hills, mountains, rivers and the sea.
Stock's Cross: Painted 1998. 38 hours. Bristol Bus set at Bramshaw, New Forest, Hants. Photo used is of a 1998 laserprint of the painting. Done for a B.R.S. Southampton Driver, Vaughan Croxton, who drove the last Bristol H.A. artics, but who preferred Buses to Lorries. He always wanted to be a Bus Driver, but his Dad told him to get down to the B.R.S. depot, who wanted drivers. Fathers, eh! I had the same sort of thing with mine.
Lily of the Valley: Painted 2000. Golden Matte. 77 hours. Oak Frame. Foden S20 from Dee Valley Transport at Llangollen. Set at Telford's Aqueduct to carry his Shropshire Union Canal canal over his Holyhead Road, the present A5 at Stretton. Their Guy Warrior and a Ford V8 Pilot in the background.
Brandy Street: Painted 2020. Golden Matte. Walnut Frame 80 hours. Old A39 at Allerford, Somerset, with a Leyland Octopus girder outfit from Scunthorpe heading for Lynmouth, Nth. Devon in 1957. This was the last in a set of 5 paintings of the trips.
Sundown: Painted 2005. Liquitex. 36 hours. Oak Frame with Cherry Slip. Evemy's from Chantry, near Frome, Foden Steamer from the 1930s.
Making Good Time: Painted 2002. 45 hours. Done for my good Pal, the Late Great Billy McCallie from Kirkcudbright. Who had 23 Paintings made over the years. One of the Leyland Clocks, the most famous one, at Shap, old A6, with Mckelvie's Albion Caledonian.
Midnight at the Windrush Cafe: Painted 1990. Liquitex. 43 hours. Based on memories of the Cafe where I used to see the Welshmen, some real comedians, either laughing and joking, or talking Politics! Away in the corner would be a couple of West Wales Drivers, speaking the Cymraeg (Welsh), like Mordav Driver the Late Great Ernest Maidment -"The Doc", who became a good friend. A place full of "Atmosphere". Silver Roadways among others changed over here on the London - Cardiff Night Trunk. And the B.R.S. Ebbw Vale Steel Waggons. In the picture are two Guy Lorries, run by well respected Hauliers - John Daniel James from Tregaron and Harry Kelly from Crickhowell. Also an Edwards of Lydbrook ERF Paper Lorry and one of Mansel Davies' 8 wheelers- Scammell Routeman. Other regulars there would be Bulmers from Hereford, Watkins or Caswells of Abergavenny, Metal Box from Neath. Sometimes Roberts of Knighton Atkis were there, who'd use the A40 as well as the A5 trunk roads. Brilliant times. We let them go. Why did we do that? I'd say we badly lost the plot! - Lost and gone forever. So I try to keep the memories alive. The main set up for this painting is : Colours vs. Black. Painted for Drew Scott at Dundee who liked Guy lorries.
Coal Waggon: Painted 1991. 53 hours. One of 3 paintings made for "The Doc". The first one, of an ERF, he gave to Peter Foden of ERF lorries. This was the second one. The third painting made for him was of his first Lorry after he went self employed, a Guy 6 wheeler. He'd say that he'd only employ drivers over the age of 50 because over a 12 month period they'd do twice as much work and cause half as much damage! And you'd see them going along the road being overtaken by everyone else. Also he was the only person I've ever seen talking to two Drivers at the same time, over two different phones in his office - to one in English and the other in the Cymraeg/Welsh!
the Barringtons: Painted 2009. Flashe Vinyl. 30 hours. To carry on the theme a bit - Mordav Foden S80 8 wheeled Coal Waggon, from Tumble, Llanelli, on the old South Wales to London road, A40, near the Windrush Cafe. Morgan and Davies Coal refused to join Thatcher's Convoys to break the Miner's Strike, being from Tumble, a mining community.
Errigal: Painted 2013. Golden Matte. 40 hours. Pearwood Frame. Hugh and Nicola Harkin's Hino 8. Stylish lorry. Good looker, basic but tough! (Unlike me.)
the Phantom: Painted 2008. Sennelier. 38 hours. Birch Frame. Western Star Timber Waggon in the North Island of New Zealand. Painted for my old pal Geoff Hinchliffe who travelled there on holiday and brought back a magazine featuring Lorries, including a few shots of this one. They were cobbled together into a Painting.
Co. Gate: Painted 2020. Lascaux. Douglas Fir Frame. Larch Slip. Morris Oxford set at the County Gate, at Cosgate on Exmoor, at the border of Devon, which is on the other side of the gate, and Somerset this side. Say about 1930. The old stone gateposts are still there. The cottage was lived in now and again. It was never a toll gate as far as I know.
Cill Dara: Painted 2009. Lascaux. 46 hours. Set on the old N8 in Ireland, DAF lorry from Cill Dara/ Kildare.
Crimea: Painted 2008. Lascaux. 50 hours. Elm Frame. Stylish Haulier from Porthmadog, Llŷn Peninsular, North Wales. Volvo 8 stopped at traffic lights during the rebuilding of the Crimea pass for the main North to South Wales Trunk road, A470.
Dead Slow: Painted 2019. Lascaux. 46 hours. Maple Frame. Shap, in the old days. British Road Services Atkinson coming up to the summit, with a Scottish Chinese 6 and trailer heading South, sheeted and roped with a "Dundee" Gallus on the back. Painted for Geoff Hinchliffe.
Moss Cafe: Painted 2006. 50 hours. Painted for Drew Scott at Dundee - 4 lorries- L-R : J.G.Barrack's of Aberdeen Guy, Robson's of Carlisle Foden, P& S Roadway's from Glasgow Mack, and Scott's of Claverhouse AEC. At the Moss Cafe, Todhills.
Silbury Hill, A4: Painted 2013. Golden Matte. 40 hours. Mahogany Frame. Silbury Hill , near where the ancient Ridgeway road crosses the A4, old Bristol to London trunk road, with Foden 8 from Sandford Haulage. Harry Clarke colours for the painting.
Dakotas: Painted 2009. Lascaux. 40 hours. Based on a photo by the Late Great Frank Richardson in his book of Pollocks Lorries and Drivers. I changed the Atkinson from a more recent "Fiery Scot" to "Dakotas", driven by Bert Todd. In the book it is heading South, just below Grantshouse, near the Cedar Cafeteria, Berwickshire, A1. In the background is the Eye Water which flows down to the sea at Eyemouth. Behind that is the main railway line to London.
Man o' the North: Painted 2001. 33 hours. Little Ray (our Daughter) and me were delivering Calendars, when coming down the Rest and be Thankful we saw this M.A.N. heading home, to the far North West of Scotland. Too late to get a photo but she jotted down some details and we took it from there.
Ice: Painted 2004. Flashe Vinyl. 29 hours. Henry Thomson of Sauchen, Aberdeenshire, Foden 8 Livestock Waggon.
Northleach, A40: Painted 1991. 42 hours. Foden S 20 from Carmarthen, West Wales, headed towards London on the A40 at Northleach.
Chalk, A40: Painted 2012. Lascaux. 36 hours. Larch frame. One of several pictures done for a good pal, Drew Scott, of Dundee - Scotts of Claverhouse, well known Haulier. Drew had Welsh connections so he liked Welsh based paintings, including one I made of Rossers of Pontlliw lorries in the yard. But this one shows a Fred Williams(FWT) Mickey Mouse Foden (S21), loaded with Stelrad radiators from Monmouth, where once I was offered a job as a changeover man, every night at the Minster Lovell toll house. The Foden is seen here climbing up through the Chiltern Beechwoods at Aston Rowant Hill - us regular Lorry Drivers on that road knew it as "Chalk", not to be confused with Chalk Hill at Dunstable on the A5, also on the Chilterns. So, a little bit of the old A40, with some Chair Bodgers in the background having a Snowball fight. Unlikely I know.
Arthog: Painted 1998. 42 hours. Station in North Wales, Cambrian Railways days. Pre 1922 when it became Great Western Railways. No longer there but the railway line became the Mawddach trail footpath which Coll and me walk every year, since way back.
Railhead: Painted 2oo4. Golden Matte. 39 hours. Crianlarich Station with McFadyen's of Campbeltown Scania, note the White Mudguards, Timber Waggon and trailer.
Tal y Llyn: Painted 1998. Sennelier Acrylic. 44 hours . Elm Frame. Painted for Gareth George, long standing Mansel Davies Driver. Set at Tal y Llyn on the outward journey from Pembrokeshire to Llŷn.
Countisbury: Painted 2007. Lascaux. 35 hours. The Leyland Octopus is being braked down the hill, 1 in 4, by Edward Jones of Minehead Unipower Timber Tractor. A letter came from George Harsley, one of the B.R.S. drivers from Scunthorpe, with his account of the journey in 1957. They were told to wait at the foot of Porlock Hill for the Unipower to tow them up. Anyone who knows that hill, which used to be listed as a 1 in 3 hill, would remember the dodgy bends. George said they waited a couple for hours for nothing to turn up, then decided to go it alone. Before the Lynmouth Flood Disaster of 1952 this stretch of the A39 would never have been used by heavy Lorries travelling to Lynmouth, who'd go via Barnstaple then back into Lynmouth. But the girders they were taking in 1957 were to replace the bridge at Barbrook, which had been washed away 5 years before, so the only way to go was via Porlock and Countisbury. George and his second man only got as far as the second bend on the hill when all their steerers rose up in the air and they were stuck good and proper! Eventually the Unipower arrived and they were back in business. I think they had to re-arrange the road a bit! It took them up onto Exmoor and they were alone again - until they reached the top of Countisbury. They took one look at the hill down into Lynmouth and said - we'll never get down there on these brakes - so they nosed the lorry into the side, chocked up all the wheels, and walked down into the town to get their Digs for the night. The next day the Unipower was back on the job, in this painting holding them back as they went down. Different times, and as Albion Jack once said- What men and what machines! - and that is really the story behind these paintings. Back in the mid '60s I was living in digs nearby, driving tippers, and got to know the history round there quite well. And Coll and I still travel through that way, for the odd break, on our way to see a fantastic Garden at Docton Mill, North Devon. (See their website.)
Iron Bridge: Painted 2001. 100 hours. Streetscape. Maudslay badged AEC, at Greenford, Middlesex, West London. Painted for Bob Gearing whose Dad's van is in the foreground. Bob, an old pal, is a well known AEC man, whose Father was a changeover Driver on for Entress Transport at Swansea, driving the "Lulus" as they were called and changing over every night at Loudwater, old A40.
Burn: Painted 2011. Lascaux. 40 hours. Northumberland Volvo, crossing a stream, or Burn as it is called in those parts, on a Forestry road.
Bridge of Aln: Painted 2005. Flashe Vinyl. 30 hours. More of Northumberland. Redpath's of Wooler Leyland Comet, on the Wooler Road at the Bridge of Aln, an old Coaching Inn. Painted for my Pal, the Late Great Charlie Turner of Alnwick, who drove the lorry, and later had his own tipper. When he was a lad he'd sit at the Lion Bank with his pals - Peter Rule the Lorry Photographer, Les Baston, ex Redpaths and the last Seddon Atkinson Driver, and the Late Great Raymond Jobson who was another Redpath's livestock driver, watching the Scotsmen coming through- Pollock's, Munro's, Gibbs, etc., heading South. You could show Raymond a photo of any stretch of road in the UK and he'd know where it was. Real transport men. Am hoping to do a bit about them in a special Northumberland Roadside feature one day.
A6, old road: Painted 2018. Lascaux. Maple Frame. Cromford, Derbyshire, with Foden Tipper, driven by David Morton, from Chesterfield, very long standing 8 wheeler Driver, Foden man, good friend and loyal customer.
Early Doors: Painted 2013. Lascaux. 55 hours. Cherry Frame. Old established Carmarthen Hauliers from Whitemill, Matthew and Pa, Andrew leaving Aberaeron behind, one early morning in their Scanias.
Pretty Corner: Painted 2006. Flashe Vinyl. 25 hours. Oak frame with Sycamore Slip. North Norfolk near Cromer. B.R.S.man, Glenn Muir with his ERF Artic.
Early Birds: Painted 2014. Lascaux. 46 hours. Oak Frame. On an old road across the Pennines, pre M62 motorway days. At the Springhouse Farm Cafe. The 1000th Atkinson built, run by Hanson's, and restored by Atki. man, Lawrence Buxton from Wakefield. Main set up for painting is basically a Red and Green Lorry set off by a backdrop of Blues and Oranges. (Brown is a shade of orange). Another version was done for Alan Dean, of Joe Dean of Halifax, featuring his Albion Reiver which I hope to include in a feature about him. Soon. Hopefully. Lawrence and Alan, both very good friends. Stars of the road.
Forest Flyer: Painted 2011. Lascaux. 40 hours. Cherry Frame. Harold Read in the Forest of Dean. Another Star of the Road. ERF KV, in the old Royal Mail colours of Scarlet, Maroon and Black. Smartest of Liveries. Steel Coiler Lorry.
Night Rider: Painted 1995. 30 hours. Foden 8 Coal Waggon. Harry Clarke colours for this painting - which is one of my top ten!
A58, old road: Painted 2016. Lascaux. 76 hours. Oak Frame. B.R.S. Maudslay Meritor, running home from Liverpool along the A58 at Smallbridge, near Littleborough. From a black and white photo taken by the Late Great Albion Jack, 1950, evening rush hour time. Bit different from today!
Irby Hill: Painted 2007. Liquitex. 45 hours. Walnut Frame. Danish Bacon Boys leaving Grimsby, AEC driven by Mick Collins (very old friend) and Leyland artics. trying to catch him up! One of the last Liquitex paintings I made, after using those paints on and off since the early 1960s.
Hermit: Painted 2021. Lascaux and Flashe. 12 hours. Plumwood Frame. Portrait of a man who was badly beaten up and nearly killed by some thugs when he was 30, and who turned his back on the world. The story was featured on the TV, and this is my take on it.
